Joint Press Release

The Seychelles Human Rights Commission, the Ombudsman and the Bar Association of Seychelles

The Petition of the Seychelles Human Rights Commission, Ombudsman and Bar Association of Seychelles challenging the Tenth Constitutional Amendment was mentioned again before the Constitutional Court on Tuesday 8th November 2022.

In compliance with the previous order of the Court, the Bar Association of Seychelles filed evidence of its good standing as a registered association and also of its mandate to prosecute the Petition. The Respondents (the President, the Speaker of the National Assembly, the Government), represented by the Attorney General, declined the Court’s invitation to file counter evidence regarding the standing and mandate of the Bar Association.

The Respondents for their part filed an affidavit opposing the Petitioners’ application for the recusal of the judges of the Court and for this matter to be heard by a judge unconnected with the case. The Court has directed the Petitioners to file their written submissions on certain points of procedure raised in the Respondents’ affidavit by 6 December 2022, when the case will be mentioned again.

End.
